Castle Holidays

There is a popular preconception that renting a castle for a holiday is for the privileged few.  Easy mistake to make if you’re not in the industry, given the rental rates can run into the thousands.  It’s easy to see why John McCain’s ‘Jo the Plumber’ immediately assumes it’s not an affordable choice for him. 

I thought this too when I first joined the business in 2005 and I have been working ever since on trying to dispel this myth.  One day I conducted a simple exercise.  I took one of our parent company’s popular holiday cottages in Cornwall and worked out the cost of the weekly rental per head over May Bank Holiday.  I then took one of our most popular castles in Scotland and for the same week worked out the rental cost per head.  The castle was £51 more expensive per head than the cottage.  In other words, for an extra £7 a day you could enjoy the grandeur of holidaying in a castle in Scotland.  If you don’t believe me, here is the cottage & here is the castle. 

Of course there are some super exclusive properties that are only affordable to the privileged few and that’s fine, there will always be certain proprties that remain out of most people’s reach.  But there are many more self catering castles out there that are affordable to the average Jo, and I hope I’ve made you realise that thinking of renting one of them for your next holiday should not be regarded as merely a pipedream.
